PROPER SUPPLEMENTATION IS IMPORTANT

Horses no longer have the ability to go out and browse for their food, vitamins and minerals. Because we now confine horses to one specific area for most, if not all, of their lives we are required to provide for them, via supplementation, everything that they need to be healthy and perform at their best. Commercial vitamin/mineral horse supplements can, by law, include only enough ingredients for one day, and one day only. Therefore, if for example, your horse is deficient in selenium you need provide two or more sources of selenium in order to get his or her levels up and back into the normal range.

When the National Research Council (NRC) developed its Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) it did not take into consideration the regional vitamin and mineral differences of content in hay/alfalfa or the level of exercise that the horse would be performing. Because of this, all other supplement manufacturers are formulating their "one size fits all" supplements using an average level of "normal" values. Therefore, these supplements are not always exactly what our horses require. Inadequate supplementation can also lead to the overuse of pharmaceuticals and often times unnecessary treatment protocols (i.e. Shockwave therapy, joint injections, body work, stall rest).
